◆ 競馬における 「予後不良」 とは、「安楽死」 を婉曲的に表現したものである、と書いた。けれど、あるいは、この「安楽死」 という表現もまた一種の婉曲語法かもしれなくて、より明確に書くとすれば 「薬殺」 になるだろうか。

◆ 生物の死にかんして、「死ぬ」 とか 「殺す」 とかいったコトバは生々しすぎるので、しばしば婉曲的な別のコトバに置き換えられる。「あの世へ行く」 あるいは 「あの世へ送る」、「永眠する」 あるいは 「永眠させた」などなど。

◆ 性（器）にかんするコトバや排泄にかんするコトバも、また同じ。「下腹部」 というコトバにはいまだに慣れない。山では、「雉撃ち」「お花摘み」などというコトバもある。

◆ 死や性や排泄に関連するコトバを遠回しに表現するのは、なにも日本語だけにかぎらない。英語ではその種の婉曲語法を euphemism と呼ぶ。オンライン辞書 Encarta World English Dictionary [North American Edition] に、euphemism の少し詳しい説明があった。ほどよくまとまっているので、やや長いが引用（euphemism の実例をグリーンで強調した）。

The capacity of a euphemism to conceal tends to diminish over the years, as it becomes more and more closely associated with its referent, and if the taboo against talking about the referent remains in force, a fresh euphemism needs to be found for it. For instance, toilet was once a euphemism (it had previously referred to a dressing room with washing facilities), but it has long since become a plainly understood term for "a place of urination and defecation," a term now needing its own euphemism: rest room and powder room for the room itself, and commode for the plumbing fixture.

◆ 近年は、politically correct (PC) の影響もあって、euphemism が著しく増えている。garbage collector （ゴミ屋）のことを sanitation engineer （公衆衛生専門家）、prison （牢屋）のことを correctional facility （矯正施設）。

◆ 婉曲語法の極めつけの例は、ジェノサイドの言い換えとしての、「最終解決」 （Final Solution） と 「民族浄化」 （ethnic cleansing）だろう。ナチスドイツとユーゴ紛争で生まれたこれらふたつのコトバの見事なまでの白々しさ！
