◆ 英語では、bicycle（bike）に乗れば、だれもが cyclist（bicyclist）で、なにも競輪選手であることを要しない。

◆ このおばちゃん（↑）もりっぱな cyclist（サイクリスト）である。ところで、この cyclist、日本語にしようと思うと意外と難しい。pedestrian は「歩行者」と訳せばそれですむが、cyclist には直接対応する日本語がない。「自転者」といった日本語でもあればよいが、そんな単語はないので、強いて言うなら「自転車運転手」になるだろうか。

◆ 「自転車男性」や「自転車女性」という表現の「男性」「女性」は、なにも男女の別を言いたいわけではなく、それ以外に言いようがないので（「自転車人間」などとは言えない）使用しているだけではないかと思う。会話では「自転車の人」とか「自転車の方」とか言いようがあるが、新聞記事では使えないだろう。
